I was reading a discussion on this and someone from India said it sounded like a Supari killing. I’m still looking it up. Basically from articles I’ve read they almost sound the same. Someone pays a hit man. Many of the articles that I’ve seen state that the people charged robbed or made it look like a robbery.

    I sympathize completely with Sparkle’s family. Personally, I don’t know what I would do if that were my daughter. The defence however, does have a point;
1] Why would the court base their decision solely on the testimony of witnesses who are chronic liars?
2] It seems very strange that a hired hitman would head out to murder without a weapon.
The situation makes Mr Chiman Rai look very guilty but I would still think that the court would base a conviction on more evidence than that.

The murderer was obviously Ricky Rai. The father is probably covering up for him, like most parents would. That is why Chiman Rai did not testify in his on his own behalf. Ricky Rai should rot in hell.

Yes, that is a big possibility. The conviction does not seem to have the ample evidence necessary for life in prison. Would love to know if it low/med or high security.

Rickey Rai is the biggest wimp on the planet, made evident that he gave up his child, and married an Indian woman chosen by his father. Sparkle was too good for him.

Did anyone notice how Ricky looks so much different than any of his siblings? He truly is the black sheep of the family. It’s ironic his father is so racist against someone black marrying into the family when his son looks part black himself.
It seems that Ricky has been brainwashed since Sparkle died. He doesn’t go by Ricky anymore, no facial hair, went back to school, no more black girls to date just Indian women, that are arranged, and to forget about his black daughter.
I think Ricky felt more comfortable with her family. I think he embraced the African-American culture and felt at home with them, since her family embraced him so easlly.

Where is the daughter of Sparkel Rai and who are her guardians? Has Ricky Rai disowned his daughter in that he has not seen her in 8 years?

    Jean,
See this. Sparkle’s step-mother & father have custody of the child. Ricky Rai’s hasn’t seen her since shortly after the murder and his parents have never seen her.

Firstly I had not heard about this update on Ricky Rai.He is scum
I wish I was on that jury.
I understand how we Indians are about marrying outsiders especially of a differant race but killing the spouse is not the answer. And he does not live in India so…….

There are 5 scums in this case. Chiman Rai, Ricky Rai and the three African-American men involved in arranging the killing. All despicable. I’m not normally for the death penalty but there are some cases where it seems fitting. Perhaps a lifetime of Chiman Rai having to look over his shoulder in prison is sufficient. I agree with the previous poster. Sparkle (and her family!) seem way too good for the Rais. Every Indian should be ashamed that one of their own would do this out of prejudice. That poor little girl.

Initially, I wished that he would have received the death penalty, but to be fair about ( it makes me sick to say,but I have to) it, he wasn’t the one who did the actually killing, so they had to give him life without parole.

Now when you look at life without parole ,it may not seem like anything , but it is. Right now, Chiman may not be thinking nothing about it, but I’m hoping that live for the next 10+ years. By then, Analla will be an adult. Though her parents aren’t looking forward to telling her about the tragic circumstances of her mother’s death, you know that the day will have to come. Chiman may have to be confronted by her and answer her question of ” Why?” After that he may wish that he would have received the death penalty( then again he’s so took a mother from a little girl, he probably would spit on Analla if he could)

Man, that whole “precious” family sickened me. All of them had compassion for their father, but not one of them acknowledged their own flesh and blood or expressing any sympathy for her or Sparkle’s family. I’m also not going to let brother Rajeev( Rick) off the hook. His butt ought to be kicked big time for walking out on his daughter, then tried to lied about his folks not being racists. Oh god! he could have kept that lie in his mouth. I just can’t see he could just walk out and not stand for his daughter . He cannot be much of man to do that. Chiman ‘s lawyer’s is talking about appealing the sentence. What for? he told on himself with recordings of himself and the guy who he got to kill Sparkle.

That wasn’t tradition that came from the Rai’s , that was outright bigotry. I laughed when one of his son’s, when asked by a lawyer, said ” I dated a Black woman”. So, what if he did? He only DATED her( if he was telling the truth about that. They are liars, you know) He didn’t marry one and I would doubt that if he ever would or else he wouldn’t be with his family. If that was the case, I could laugh and smile at them all day long , but it does not mean that I like you or that in this case want to marry you..a Black woman..

It’s sad that the family’s racism( and yes ,it’s racism no matter how the family want to spell it) impaired their better judgment. I just cannot see that their cold hearts can cause someone to disown/kill a member of their own family like that. There are interracial relationships/marriages ( including one that is South Indian/AA) in my family. Not that I would ever be bigoted, but I’m still trying find out the big deal about the races. Why? It will never never make any kind of sense to me.People are people, even though you have racists like the Rai’s ,who think otherwise

Ricky is a lying cheating waste of a human being. He moved to Chicago following all of this and brought his lying cheating ways to me and my friends. He ruined his life, brought misfortune to those around him and eventually was removed from our lives. He married a girl we knew by lying to her and taking her to New Orleans where he supposedly now resides. The guy is scum and yes, I agree – he probably did have something to do with his wife’s death. I think he probably knew something.

    1. Ricky Rai is the biggest scum as he is the obvious culprit here. He is married and has a new baby.
    2. The family should not have gone to trial because Rai’s other children are suffering due to the tremendous disrepute. Why did the family just plea bargain with the state?
    3. Chiman and his wife are guilty for raising such terrible children. Liars and cheats.
    4. Rai’s elder son tried to lie to an Indian girl about his family background but her family found out and DUMPED him.

Have they arrested this Ricky Rai yet? I really feel that he is the main person responsible. I get the feeling that maybe his father is taking the plunge when Ricky was probably the one that consulted him first about it. I hope his new family finds out and moves far, far away. Bad karma should be his alone.

You know something. I just saw this story on ID channel. I thought I heard and seen everything in this life. This is the first for me. I am an Indian and not all Indians are racists, but when it comes to religion and Indian way of life Indians are the worst people in the world besides Muslims. Indians are okay with marring into White People but no African-Americans. That is so silly and ludicrous. That’s what I don’t understand. I know personally Indians who married into other races in particular white American. When Indians themselves are dark skin colored, they hate Black People. One thing that shocked me the most was that Ricky Rai didn’t show any single form of emotion at the time of his wife, Sparkle, death or even after. He was so stone cold and rock solid. If I had been him, I would have cried my ass off and threw tantrum with the police officers to be beside her dead body no matter what her race was. I think, I have an explanation for Ricky Rai’s passive emotion. I really really don’t think he was really in love with his wife, Sparkle. As they said in court and on TV, Ricky Rai was a black-sheep of the family. That being so, he led an easy and kicked back free lifestyle. In other ward, he was following and took advantage of whatever came along his way. Even though Sparkle’s parents knew they were inseparable, it was all a show Ricky Rai put on for the others. In truth, he was not. His mind and thoughts were somewhere else. I believe, he fell in love with Sparkle, married her and had a child with her, because he just didn’t care of all the consequences or the pain he will put his parents and his siblings through. He was only after his enjoyment. That’s why he just didn’t cry a single drop of tear for his wife, Sparkle or his daughter. But what made me cry watching this story on TV was his little daughter. How could he just leave her with her grandparents and move on with his life. That is cold-hearted and cruel. What’s worse is he hasn’t seen her in 8 years. How can he do that? Now, he is moved on and married to an Indian girl living in New Orleans.

May God Bless Sparkle and her daughter.

Wow! I just watched this case on the ID channel and I feel so sorry for Sparkle’s family. As for Ricky, he is just as heartless as his family, so I wasn’t surprised that he showed little emotion to his daughter. I had a lot of Indian friends in school and I have witnessed first hand the scrutiny that is placed on them by their parents to be over achievers and scholars. They are very greedy people, they come from a land of total poverty (nothing) and will do anything it takes to succeed. They show very little love even in their own arranged marriages. Marriage to them is a business deal only.

Ricky Rai is a very deceptive human being. I believe his deceptive tactics of declaring his parents were dead shows he may have been as much as responsible for the circumstances that led up to the killing of Sparkle. Many African Americans are not aware of the cultures of other groups who came to America, and often have intense hatred for African Americans because of the trash the see on TV…these immigrant groups assume that that trash represents all African Americans. Indians as a whole have a major complex with caste and color. For instance, Indians who were taken from the sub Indian continent to the Caribbean (Guyana used to be British Guiana, Trinidad and some to Jamaica) to work on the sugar plantations, have a large number of descendants in Guyana and Trinidad. To be more specific, the population of those nations is 50% Indian and 50% people of African descent. Although nowadays some of those groups marry each other freely, in some cases it is still frowned upon, and back in the day, there were also murders committed if any Indian woman married outside of her group. So you can see this pattern of racial hatred is somewhat common among Indians as a group…marry anyone except someone of African descent.

Well said Ronke! Ricky Rai should have been indicted as an accessory to the murder. He was shockingly cold when confronted with the murdered body of his wife & mother to his child (who he has since abandoned).

Such a tragedy for Sparkle and her family.

I think LISA here is every bit as racist as Chiman Rai! Nothing justifies murder or racism, so LISA look at yourself before you point fingers.
