JournoList: Aiding and Abetting THE Narrative – UPDATED

Many others are blogging away at this, so I’ll keep it brief and then shower you with links. (Image dutifully swiped from VodkaPundit, as instructed.)

Remember back in 2008, during that mind-numbing campaign, how the MSM covered for Obama’s association with the poisonous Rev. Jeremiah Wright and attacked any one who dared bring it up as a racist? A frothing lunatic blinded by bigotry, by the very thought of a non-white man in the White House?

Remember how many of us sensed a … ahem… a complicity between the Obama campaign and the MSM? A secret agenda? A “narrative?”? And how we were subsequently attacked as black-helicopter conspiracy mongers? Right-wing hacks? Nutjobs?

Heh. We were right.

It’s like All The President’s Men, but in reverse.

The Daily Caller:

[Emphasis Admin] According to records obtained by The Daily Caller, at several points during the 2008 presidential campaign a group of liberal journalists took radical steps to protect their favored candidate. Employees of news organizations including Time, Politico, the Huffington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Guardian, Salon and the New Republic participated in outpourings of anger over how Obama had been treated in the media, and in some cases plotted to fix the damage.

In one instance, Spencer Ackerman of the Washington Independent urged his colleagues to deflect attention from Obama’s relationship with Wright by changing the subject. Pick one of Obama’s conservative critics, Ackerman wrote, “Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares — and call them racists.”

Michael Tomasky, a writer for the Guardian, also tried to rally his fellow members of Journolist: “Listen folks–in my opinion, we all have to do what we can to kill ABC and this idiocy in whatever venues we have. This isn’t about defending Obama. This is about how the [mainstream media] kills any chance of discourse that actually serves the people.

I’ll give you a minute to clean off your screen. You read that correctly. Journalists plotting to kill “…any chance of discourse that actually serves the people.”

Fausta and Stacy both comment on their charming fantasizing of attacking Tea Party members, igniting Matt Drudge, to even Rush Limbaugh having a heart attack.

Moe Lane on the future career choices facing these so-called “journalists.” They have learned the power of “Trust no one…” the hard way.

Doug Powers at Michelle Malkin notes their Election Night “ecstasy”. Makes you want to take a bath, doesn’t it?

Ed Driscoll at PJM: Who needs a Manchurian Candidate when you can have a Manchurian Listserv instead? Then POTUS can play golf all the time, because he knows his lackeys will attack his detractors cover for him. Oh wait….

UPDATE: The hits keep on comin’. More from The Daily Caller on JournoList’s hyperventalation over McCain picking Sarah Palin as his running mate in 2008. Stacy comments further on the suspicious “synchronicity of liberal media messaging.”

The Tangled Web of Obama’s Politics

While the honeymoon has been over for a while, inside sources whisper that Obama is now sleeping on America’s couch. It won’t be long before he’s kicked out of the house and asks his secretary find him a place to live.

First, let’s back up to the election of 2008. Even before then, to the primaries. Allegations are surfacing that Obama was selected (read pushed) by the DNC over Hillary Clinton, over the votes of millions of Americans. Threats, intimidation and voter fraud were rampant, especially in the caucus states. Gigi Gaston is a writer/director who produced a documentary, We Will Not Be Silenced, outlining the rampant voter fraud perpetrated by the Obama campaign. Check out Carol’s Closet. Maggie has more on each video. Hillbuzz has more on the corruption, as well.

My question is, with Hillary being the political animal she is, why did she roll over and let Obama get away with this? Was she threatened? Was her family threatened? Was it presented as a ‘take one for the team or we’ll paint you a raaaaacist’ scenario? It seems odd to me that Hillary would allow someone else to cheat her out of the prize she’s coveted for so long. Perhaps it has been covered elsewhere and I’ve missed it. Send links/info/etc., and I will update to include.

The New Black Panther voter intimidation and subsequent dropping by the DOJ has been roundly discussed, by people much smarter than me. However, some believe the case has ‘nine lives’ and it is about to be resurrected, much to the administration’s dismay.

It’s our sincere hope that Eric Holder made a colossal mistake of Watergate proportions with the dismissal of prosecution in the Black Panthers case. When Republicans take back Congress, they need to investigate this matter fully — and not be intimidated or bullied by the CBC, NAACP, Rainbow Push Coalition, or the rest of the Race Industry into letting this matter go.

It’s clear the Justice Department is engaging in a policy and practice of refusing prosecution of black criminals who have committed crimes against whites. It would be unconscionable for the Attorney General to refuse to prosecute white criminals for attacks upon blacks. The reverse needs to be true as well — and an Attorney General who spearheads a practice of such racial discrimination needs to be removed from office.

The NBPP leader that Holder cleared of charges, Malik Shabazz, proclaims his solidarity with Osama Bin Laden. Erick believes he would make an excellent campaign issue (emphasis Admin.):

Now we have King Samir Shabazz. He showed up at a polling location in Pennsylvania and intimidated voters going into the polls. The Justice Department pursued the case and, having received a verdict it the government’s favor, Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder stopped pursuing the New Black Panthers.

Video has subsequently come out of King Samir Shabazz encouraging the murder of white children.

Republican candidates nationwide should seize on this issue. The Democrats are giving a pass to radicals who advocate killing white kids in the name of racial justice and who try to block voters from the polls.

The Democrats will scream racism. Let them. Republicans are not going to pick up significant black support anyway. But here’s the thing: everyone but the Democrats will understand this is not racism. This isn’t even about race. This is about the judgment of an administration that would rather prosecute Arizona for doing what the feds won’t do than prosecuting violent thugs who would deny you and me the right to vote while killing our kids

This video is just one example of Washington’s cluelessness of what is happening outside the city limits of DC. They never knew the Devil would actually show up and collect, just for selling their souls for one election. Note the audience’s reponse to CA congressman Brad Sherman’s response that he’s “simply not aware of that (New Black Panther) case.”

This is why most Democrats are eschewing Town Halls, this summer…the anger and disgust with their malfeasance has reached a boiling point, and they know it.

Before the NAACP can even pass it’s resolution that the Tea Parties are raaaaacist (an obvious DNC plot to redirect attention while they steal even more) based on false and inflammatory press coverage, the Tea Party beats them to the punch with their own resolution, stating the organization is ‘bigoted,’ a ‘partisan attack dog organization,’ and urges the IRS to reexamine their tax-exempt status since they are obviously now a political organization, and no longer focus on civil rights.

Obama has personally set race relations back decades. Sending his grouchy wife to stir the pot at the NAACP convention is like throwing gas on a fire. As The Anchoress (paraphrased) says, “There is an art to good politics, and this ain’t art.” Blaming the Tea Parties for the racial schism developing in America is nothing more than projectile projecting.

More people than ever believe Obama is a socialist. A puppet controlled by union thugs. His disdain for Americans is becoming more evident every day.

Barry Obamski learned his skills well. It’s time. November is coming.

UPDATE: Linked by The Anchoress! Many thanks!

Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin Eater

Autumn, ahh autumn. My favorite time of year. Crunchy leaves under your feet, trips to the pumpkin farms, tailgate parties, pulling out the warm sweaters, the run-up to Thanksgiving. And politicians behaving badly.

The NY-23 race has become quite entertaining. The Conservative Party candidate for the district, Doug Hoffman, will shortly request federal oversight from the DOJ because he fully expects voter fraud on election day.

Cheating? Really? Do they really think THIS ADMINISTRATION won’t aid and abet will help ensure a fair election? Hmmmm… The same White House who is trying to exert such extreme control over the news cycle that they believe they decide who is a legitimate news organ and who is not?

…if ABC’s on it too, that becomes impossible and the story becomes “legitimate.” From now on, think of Tapper as the swing vote in the press pool, I guess.

…That last part is truer now than it was then, before the ACORN story broke big and Beck’s ratings soared even higher. The White House must be panicking at the thought that the “legitimate” media will only ignore these stories for so long before the lure of bigger, Foxier ratings finally proves too much. Ideological solidarity only goes so far; as Axelrod himself acknowledged about FNC, ultimately the news nets are in business to make money. So here he and Emanuel are, leaning on them not only to ignore Fox but to ignore stories that Fox covers, as if the underlying facts are somehow tainted by association (“Let’s make sure that we keep perspective on what are the most important stories”). Creepy.

Jake Tapper is to be commended for not drinking the KoolAid.

RINO Dede Scozzafava, another candidate for NY-23, has really stepped in it. She called the police on reporter John McCormick of The Weekly Standard after a speaking engagement in Lewis County, New York. Desperate campaigns will do anything, I suppose. Interestingly enough, just a few days before he received an unmannerly phone call from Matt Burns (Scozzafava’s campaign spokesman)

…who didn’t like something John had reported, and started yelling abusively at him the moment he answered the phone. We could hear Mr. Burns ten feet away.

Wow. Where these people raised by wolves or something? How is this behavior going to help his candidate?

Moe Lane and Pamela Geller have more on the NY-23 fiasco, the Working Families Party and the (surprise!) ACORN fraud that goes along with it. No wonder Doug Hoffman is concerned. Every red-blooded American should be outraged. How many other elections were tipped to their pre-selected candidates (Democrats)? Will we ever know?

Doug Hoffman’s spokesman, Rob Ryan has the last word:

“The only thing the police need to investigate in this race is if Dede Scozzafava is impersonating a Republican.”

Indeed.

Oh, and DumpDede.

UPDATE: More from Michelle. Seems Dede either has a heightened sense of hyperbole or she’s a bald-faced liar.

UPDATE II: Jim Geraghty says, “It’s Time for the RNC and NRCC to Ask for Their Money Back.” (h/t Moe Lane)

This goes well beyond any reasonable difference on policy. There’s room in the party for pro-choice Republicans and pro-gay marriage Republicans and maybe even the odd pro-card-check Republican. But not this kind of arrogance, this kind of clumsy dishonesty, this kind of reckless hostility to a reporter and a publication that need not be an enemy.

The RNC and NRCC are better than the Scozzafava campaign; it’s time for them to demonstrate that they know how a candidate and her staff are supposed to react when asked a question, and show that Scozzafava’s team’s behavior is just not acceptable.

Like My Senior Needs ANOTHER Reason to Skip – Updated

September 8, the day of Obama’s National Super-De-Duper Indoctrination Speech to our school children, has just been dubbed National Skip Day. Like kids need another reason to ditch. Cool kids, get your hall pass here.

I guess Allahpundit doesn’t have kids of his own (I don’t know, I’m only guessing) – if he did, why would he even allow those precious little ears to hear O’Suavey’s dulcet tones of socialism while he attempts the grandest overreach of all time? He’s sooooo cool; he multi-tasks like that.

Ace:

Here’s a secondary harm in Obama’s address — even if he himself keeps his speech nonpartisan, he’s giving the signal to thousands of leftist teachers that it’s time for full-on indoctrination.

Children are the future of our great country, not the targets of leftist propaganda.

Americans now feel their kids are being unfairly targeted, thanks to Obama’s stupid move here. He’ll get his speech done, lots and lots of teachers and faculty will use the opportunity to get a little indoctrination in, a few pro-Democrat, pro-Obama warm and fuzzies implanted into the innocent and gullible hearts of our young. But this little stunt will have gained him little, and cost him much.

But he has awakened the Ents. School boards are close to all-powerful, but they are elected on a local level. Most parents and citizens have been asleep at the wheel, especially in Republican territory. Because of this event, we are going to see MASSES of people show up at school board meetings and PTA meetings who never did before, just like the townhalls of August.

They’re going to be asking some questions:

* Why did you let this happen here?
* Why did we elect you anyway if you’re just gonna be a sop to the left?
* You know what? We’re gonna vote you out and get some people who actually CARE about our kids running our school boards.

I should point out one thing that’s true about the upcoming school board meetings that was not true about the townhalls. There will be enough angry citizens attending in those meetings to vote out incumbents in the next election. They won’t require the media, they won’t require the Republican Party. They have kids, their neighbors and friends have kids, and no amount of teacher endorsements, union intimidation, or smooth talking will keep them from turning out ineffective or leftist school board members, the very next election.

I am telling you now, and as far as I know, I am the first to say it. Obama’s circus-stunt flyby of our nation’s public schools on September 8 will end up dealing a fatal blow to the left’s decades-long ownership of the schools in conservative territory. It won’t happen right away, and it will in fact be a long and bloody war. The left is dug in and fortified, and they’ve been playing dirty for as long as anyone can remember. But it will happen. [E Pluribus Unum at RedState]

Who put these people in charge, anyway? Hippy vegans? Cannibals? Oh yeah, them.

Protect your babies, while you still can.

UPDATE: Extreme BAD MANNERS reported by Maggie’s Notebook:

Did you know that President Obama went directly to School Principals to announce his plans to speak to our school age children? And did you know this is a “major breach of protocol?” Did you know that, at least, he should have only contacted School Superintendents?

More from American Daughter:

Ignoring school superintendents, Obama wrote to school principals announcing his forthcoming speech to school children. This is a serious breach of protocol. All communications should be routed through the Superintendent of Schools for each district.

Not only was this bad manners bigtime, it has implications for states’ rights and local rights that go far beyond the one event. School districts are overseen by a School Board, usually elected by the citizens of the district. Voters expect that board to ensure an education that reflects their values and goals for their children.

By deliberately cutting the local school boards and the superintendents out of the loop, Obama is essentially bypassing the voters, including parents. He is establishing a precedent for federal control of the children, for making them wards of the federal authority. This is totally a page out of the Marxist playbook that Obama and his office mate terrorist Bill Ayers used in Chicago.

Read it all.

Tell Me, Was It Worth It?

Stacy of The Other McCain went to a book talk by Johan Norberg, author of Financial Fiasco: How America’s Infatuation with Home Ownership and Easy Money Created the Economic Crisis. He interviewed Mr. Norberg for The American Spectator:

Norberg said the TARP bailout would have the perverse effect of encouraging lenders and other financial institutions to engage in the same kinds of risky behaviors that led to last year’s meltdown.
“If bankers make stupid mistakes and we bail them out, it encourages them to take big risks in order to make short-term gains, knowing that if they lose out, they can always send the bill to the taxpayers,” Norberg said…

I’ve always said that the greed and avarice of liberals combined with backroom marxism is what set up the perfect storm of the 2008 election. What better way to tank America than to elect a puppet – reminiscent of Dauphins – that are easily controlled by various and sundry Richelieus pulling strings from behind lace curtains?

Is it worth it? Was one election worth it? Hello? Bueller? Bueller?

Look! A Memeorandum thread!

Maybe He’ll Defect

After breaking many of his campaign promises, Obama decides to keep this one: “Obama to Address Muslim World From Egypt.

Really. Wonder if he’ll face Mecca during his speech, too? Or bow to whatever variety of sheik he might meet on the street?

Dude! Where’s MY Conga Line?

White House nightlife under investigation – “This party atmosphere sends the wrong message.” (h/t Malkin)

Ohhhh, there’s more! While we get to worry about how to squeeze every-livin’ dime out of our grocery budget, the Obama administration is blowing money like they’re in Vegas, baby.

And where’s the press, to stand up and dourly report this gross spending spree akin to Bush43 using too many White House Kneelexes? At the party, silly!

He Said, She Said, Bob Said

Dear Leader said yesterday in a joint press conference with PM Gordon Brown:

“What I’m looking at is not the day-to-day gyrations of the stock market, but the long-term ability for the United States and the entire world economy to regain its footing. And, you know, the stock market is sort of like a tracking poll in politics. It bobs up and down day to day, and if you spend all your time worrying about that, then you’re probably going to get the long-term strategy wrong.”

New blog pal Steve said:

Of course he’s looking at the stock market. Does anyone really believe that there is a day of 3%, 4% or greater drops in the market that he and his staff are not aware of it? Baloney! The only truth in Obama’s statement is that if he worried about it, he would get his long term strategy wrong. If your strategy is to erase wealth from a broad section of the population then you purposely ignore the market. You also sow fear, confusion and mistrust so that the market is unable to find footing. Do this long enough and you will erase huge amounts of 401Ks and other investments.

Fausta is yelling from the windows.

Either he is the most clueless CIC to date, or this is some kind of script that has been honed and crafted for decades. The Anchoress leans towards the latter.

I don’t know, but the president seems content to let the economy crash. His press secretary seems amused by it all – at least he seems to be giggling as the White House names yet another public voice that is to be laughed at and dismissed for daring to question this administration.

The condescension.

How could one man, with a campaign so brilliantly managed that it resembled a tsunami, be plagued by so many missteps since day one? What if they are not missteps at all? Elizabeth also says

The president seems wholly untroubled by any of this and is happily continuing on toward the creation of “one world” with a global “new deal” on his mind. The swiftness with which he is accruing and consolidating power is breathtaking, and most people don’t even realize he’s doing it.

That is one master of the game, America has elected. Bill Clinton wouldn’t be worthy to tie his sandals.

After lobbing waterballoons back and forth over the fence for a day or two, Rush throws down the gauntlet and challenges King O to a debate. Since he is offering to put The Won up with his own money, not on the taxpayer’s dime, then will Obama have to bring his own teleprompter or will Rush provide that as well? Will he bring the market along, tucked safely in his shoe bag, so it doesn’t bob about on a daily basis? Who will head up the conga line? Enquiring minds want to know!

First CPAC Post – Ouch!

3.5 hours in and my feet are killing me already!

There is so much to see and do and hear – it is truly overwhelming. Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) is speaking now and just quoted Samuel Adams -the one about it doesn’t take a majority to rule, but a pesky minority that constantly acts up (para-phrased, of course!).

I’m sitting in this chair, right now!

Earlier, I attended the Media Malpractice session by John Ziegler. During the session, he showed the entire, UNCUT post campaign interview he did with Sarah Palin. This is the same interview that caused a media storm a few weeks ago when some snippets where shown in the usual MSM outlets.

John would show Sarah videos of different interviews (Brian Williams, Charlie Gibson, Katie Couric) and different media “interpretations” of her during the campaign. At times, she said it was her first viewing. Other times you could see the hurt on her face – especially when the attacks were on her children.

Practically every answer, sentence, aside utterance was twisted and misreported to fit the MSM’s agenda. She said that her office STILL gets calls on the “is Trig really her baby?” idiocy. She contacts papers to for corrections – nothing happens.

She said during this election cycle, something happened – there was a shift in society and in the behavior of the MSM. Forget fact-checking or balance. The new rules are harsh, unfair and unbalanced. If reputations are trashed or children are harmed – who cares? As long as the ratings are good – let’s make something else up!

The saddest part is that (she and John discussed this at length) if she’d been picked as Obama’s running mate, she’d have been handled with kid gloves.

Oh, for something completely different, I learned about The Rule 5 of Blogging.

The Gathering Storm – Updated

I’ll say one thing for ol’ Obama. His big ideas of stimulation and subjugation have energized the conservative base like nothing I’ve seen in years. CPAC should be a gas!

Malkin: Rebel Yell!

Disgraced Democrat Sen. John Edwards was right about one thing: There are two Americas. One America is full of moochers, big and small, corporate and individual, trampling over themselves with their hands out demanding endless bailouts. The other America is full of disgusted, hard-working citizens getting sick of getting played for chumps and punished for practicing personal responsibility.

Now is the time for all good taxpayers to turn the tables on free-lunching countrymen and their enablers in Washington. Community organizing helped propel Barack Obama to the White House. It can work for fiscal conservatism, too.

Cicero, who was one of President John Adams’ favorite writers notes that government corruption driven by political greed destroys everything in its path – 2100 years ago! Wonder if Obama ever read that during his “constitutional scholar” days. Fausta outlines today that Obama is not following Cicero’s advice, to the letter. In just the few days since Rick Santelli’s patriotic outburst on the Chicago trading floor, the awakening that was stirring in the breasts of concerned citizens over the “Stimulus” (a.k.a. The Generational Theft Act of 2009) has gained momentum. The White House noticed immediately and marked Mr. Santelli on the top of their hit list. S.O.P. for today’s White House (remember Joe the Plumber’s treatment at the hands of the Obama Press? Just google it.) After all, we can’t have anyone speaking out against Dear Leader, The Won, now can we?

Dan Gainor writes on FoxForum warning President Obama to watch out for ordinary folks like us. Those run-of-the-mill, non-elite Americans will only take so much before they revolt, and revolt we will.

Change came to Washington claiming bipartisanship and transparency. Obama lied on both. The bipartisan bill was rammed through with classic — and sleazy– Chicago-style politics. And how transparent is a process where even graduates of the Evelyn Wood speed reading course couldn’t have analyzed the bill?

Rather than mollify a worried electorate, the Democrats have angered it further. They invoke FDR like some patron saint of populism and expect the masses to march to their tune –- Pied Piper style.

AJ talks of simmering frustration nationwide, bubbling to the surface.

President Obama is rapidly morphing into President O’Blunder, with good reason. People are starting to notice he has no idea what he is doing and has basically lost control. Tony Blankley was one of those who made this observation recently. Tony goes through the now classic litany of Obama screw ups from the tax cheating cabinet to the stimulus disaster. But what is important to note is his conclusions on what this means in terms of Obama’s governing skills:

Whatever the reason, this level of presidential detachment from high policy decision making is dangerous in a White House that has so many czars and other senior players (the West Wing staff is reputed to be more than 130 — about double the usual number) combined with emissaries and strong-willed Cabinet secretaries. It may well lead to what has been called (regarding another country’s government) “the immanent structurelessness to the running of the state.”

Gerard wants Obama to just chill out for a while, do his job and keep his mouth shut. How hard can it be?

Enough with the endless billion/trillion bills and the fat fear mongering. Enough with the angry school marm lecturing. Enough with the big daddy warnings of stiffer punishment to come if we don’t shape up like right now.

Face it, man, every time you talk about saving and creating jobs thousands of people get ejected out of their jobs with a JATO assist from whatever policy you seem to be whipping out at the moment. Every time you speak of the future it gets grimmer.

Lately it seems that all you have to do is glance away from the teleprompter and hesitate and, boom!, there goes another 100 point drop in the Dow. And then, when you find the next sentence and say it, whap! there’s goes another 100 points. I’m not sure if the Dow can sink beneath absolute zero, but I’m not curious to find out.

Evil Genius thinks that Obama (and his entire Cabinet) is winging it. Ya think? I just wish he’d stop campaigning for 5 minutes and govern.

Don Surber has the best idea yet for a bail-out [Emphasis Admin].

401(k)s lost, in total, $1 trillion last year.

Does Obama care?

No?

Did he say about us: “They are as responsible as anyone could ask them to be. But then they learn that acting responsibly often isn’t enough to escape this crisis”?

No. He said that about the people who failed to live within their means.

Those of us who lived well within our means enough to sock a few bucks away are getting the shaft. Our savings are cut in half by the recession and by his irresponsible talk and our savings will be cut in half again by the inflation his reckless borrowing will rain upon us next year.

That 7.29 Misery Index that President Bush gave him will double next year.

Easily.

America would be better off saving the 401(k)s than saving the deadbeats from their own.

Remember that joke about the Grasshopper and the Ant today? It came true when we elected Barack Obama president.

Well-played, sir! At this point, I will die in my chair at work, never able to retire. All because power-hungry Democrats were willing to tank our economy just to win back The White House. Most. Ethical. Congress. Ever.

It gets better. Not only is the “governmental spending” out of control, Obama now plans to tax us to Kingdom Come. Increased taxes – in a recession. Wait just a minute there partner, we haven’t gotten our $13/week tax break yet! Does this man even have a brain? Or just an ego?

Finally, stimulus and corruption and blunders and hypocrisy aside, The Anchoress tells us to enjoy our freedom of speech while we still have it. Yes, that is on The Won’s punch list as well.

Speak up. This is still America – in this nation, for now, you are free to do so. The more you shut yourself up, the more easily others will shut you up, down the road.

Amen, sister!

The Light at the End of the Tunnel is a Trainwreck

While I may have been quiet of late (a large project at work is dragging me down, both mentally and physically), I would like to thank Larwyn the Benevolent for keeping me up to date with the latest shenanigans of Dear Leader and his goose-stepping minions!

Caleb at RedState opens tonight’s thoughts [emphasis Admin]:

Much was made, during storied campaign 2008, of the notion that we are all one people, needlessly divided. That from the many would come the one. There is not a liberal America, and a conservative America, there is the United States of America, after all. Heal this nation, we heard. Make us one, they pleaded. A lovely sentimentality, that. And an utterly false affectation, of course, as we’ve come to see over the last few weeks.

Despite left-wing bloggers’ Ministry of Truth efforts at rewriting history, to even the most casual observer it should be clear that the vaunted promise of achieving common goals through compromise or “reaching out” was discarded by the new Democrat regime just as quickly as their suit coats and the “The President’s Own” Marine Band. “I Won,” says the One. “So say we all,” say his attendant masses.

What replaced the fiction was what was underneath it all along. The Democrat idea of becoming one nation is the Democrat idea of becoming one party, one mind. When they claim to want to heal the nation, the cure they fix their sights upon is neither stitch nor coagulant, but amputation. In campaign rhetoric this was always hidden behind the media-made veil of the Obama mythos, but in the wake of the stimulus tragedy that veil is lifted. Through with hiding, the totalitarian impulses of the Obama faithful are free to scurry into full view as they raise their voices to declare what is just and what is not, to determine which life is valuable and which is not; an entirely familiar calculus for Democrats, one might add.

More so than usual, something reeks in DC. The stench is becoming overpowering, even down here in the South, when a change in wind direction would send kids scurrying for the house to escape the noxious fumes wafting from the riverside paper mill. The nation’s newly minted President is in over his head and it is painfully obvious he has no respect for the Office he holds or the People he is empowered to protect. Being able to stand above the fray and see what is good for America is a character requirement for the CIC. Any and all personal aggrievements should be put aside, far aside, for their term in office. Otherwise, you just become another tin-pot dictator. For example, in the Send-Winston-Packing caper,Fausta asks

Does that mean that Obama is letting personal feelings interfere with relations with an ally?

Personal feelings? A President putting his personal interests before those of the nation – does that sound familiar? It should – it is the modus operandi for any corrupt Democrat.

Each day brings another blunder. Really, this guy should have done his homework. Siggy shrinks his head a bit. Quite a job, considering how big is has swollen [emphasis Admin].

In fact, the President likes to speak in those high minded terms mostly because we like to hear those things. When we talk about what is good for Americans and nationhood, we flex our identity muscles and in doing so we touch that most emotional side of ourselves. No matter how hard we want to talk about these things in a logical and dispassionate way, emotions always end up dictating the discussion and we talk about what the (often partisan) research really means. The attempt to deal with important issues rationally and reasonably goes out the window.

[…] When free speech is put at risk (see Mark Steyn) the problem will not be resolved with the redistribution of wealth. When non-political endeavors become politicized or are forced to take sides, democracy is weakened. When political correctness becomes a purview of government bureaucrats and ethnic tensions are mediated as if they were engaged in a high stakes game, democratic and civil society becomes in danger of collapse.

When there is no emphasis on a common, democratic and national culture, implosion becomes inevitable. Political discourse becomes warfare with a ‘take no prisoners’ attitude (supporters say it’s OK for Obama to want to talk to Ahmadenijad, but heaven forbid he reach a compromise with Republicans). Religious groups become commandos in unspoken of battles and war, some fought as proxies for ideologues (or worse) in far away places and others fought to influence local culture and identity.

For all his high-flying rhetoric, with expiration dates or not, he has single-handedly set us back decades. At a time when we should be standing our ground, protecting our borders, rallying our defenses – we are being led down a road to ruin. Those of us who see history repeating itself are only seen as nutcases. We are sternly advised not to question the motives behind his first “victory” in Congress, even if it breaks our backs.

Much has been made of the supposed fact that little of this bill bears the marks of the current President; that it all has be jumbled together by a Congress fat with power and seeking to get all its champagne dreams of a quasi-socialist state rolling in one fell swoop. But what if that is only a partial reading of the truth just as all readings of this bill are partial and superficial?

What if, instead, this bill contains – since it is protean enough to contain almost anything – the actual items that outline the most deeply held beliefs of a man suckled at the breast of all the broken dreams that sent hundreds of millions of humans to the block in the last century? What if, as we root about in the endless paragraphs and pages, we do see the outlines, at last, of what this strange and obscure man actually believes and plans? What if nothing is accident and all is intent? And the intent is “darker than a hundred midnights down in a cypress swamp?”

Will we then understand this secretive man? Or is it already too late?

Morituri te salutamus!

A must read over at The Return of Scipio: When the Wicked Seize a Nation (h/t American Digest)

We have become as Esau. Liberty is too burdensome, too demanding, too hard to maintain, and so we have sold it for the mess of pottage promised by those apes in silk who rule over us.

Strong words for trying times.

John Adams saw today 220 years ago.

“Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.”

Goodbye and God Speed, Mr. President

Today is President Bush’s last day in office. Tomorrow he joins that exclusive club of Ex-Presidents on the golf course and lecture circuit. The Obama Four-Year-Circus begins.

bush-hug

He was known by the American people for his private compassion for families who paid the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. As CIC, he oversaw the most successful American military campaign ever. He held a nation together after the horror of 9/11. He ignored his numerous detractors and brought a quiet grace back to the office of the President. You wouldn’t know it, though, if you only got your news from the MSM.

Remember us, Mr. President. Remember us when we are burdened with new taxes, when we are silenced by new regulations as to what to say and when we can say it, when we lose our jobs, when we can no longer defend our families and lands against the murderers the new administration will welcome with open arms. Remember us, Mr. President, for we will never forget you.

The Sunday Headcold Express

Fading fast, head pounding, drowning in drainage, but I would be remiss if today wasn’t remembered.

Michelle remembers . All the WWII veterans in my family are now gone.

From Gerard: “Do not tell me it can’t be done.”

Coal in Gail Collins’ stocking.

In the many silly things demonstrated by Gail Collins’ inane column, the most glaring is the perpetually adolescent mindset that sees no point in a peaceful, nationally ennobling transition if it means waiting for the prize, and no value in introspection if it delays ripping open the gifts.

I so want one of these in my stocking. (Curses! Foiled again! They are backordered!)

The War on Christmas continues. We’re used to the usual Google slap in the face, but this time it is Amazon. This is so wrong, in so many ways! Mark Steyn reports

…about Amazon’s “Twelve Days Of Holiday” promotion, a reader complained to them about their decision not to use the word “Christmas” and received by way of response a canned e-mail apologizing instead for their use of the word “Christmas”…

Reminds me of the one and only time I used a “live-chat” for online help with a national cellular service provider. After several attempts to get the information I needed, I decided to ask the “chatter” if they were a real person. I asked several different ways, all of which replied with a question of which product was I interested in purchasing. Remember the original premise of the so-called discussion was for on-line help, not sales. Being more mischievous than I feel right now, I played with it for a while, asking all sorts of off the wall questions. What a monumental waste of time and insult to anyone’s intelligence.

An offer you can’t refuse. Everyone at this house knows my obsession with The Godfather movies. I can’t explain it myself. I love movies with lots of detail and real acting. Real actors know you can say volumes, without saying anything.

You get what you pay for [emphasis – Admin]:

Of the values progressives hold dear, none can be as central or as cherished as the promotion of diversity. It is a word that has become almost a term of art. When a private school champions its embrace of “diversity,” parents understand that the admissions office is not dying to enroll the son of a white evangelical minister or the daughter of a founding partner of a white-shoe law firm [Been there, done that. -Admin]. Rather, we know that the school makes an intentional effort to include children of certain minority groups among its student body, and that most important among those groups are African-Americans and the children of gay families.

Left-leaning California’s horror about this newly revealed schism between two of its favorite sons is a situation that cries out for a villain, but the one that liberal white Hollywood has chosen for the role probably won’t make it all the way to the third act.

“It’s their churches,” somebody whispered to one of us not long after the election; “It’s their Christianity,” someone else hissed, rolling her eyes. Apparently the religion espoused by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is now the enemy, at least among the smart set, and if this sounds like a regional issue, it’s not.

Z.Dwight Billingsly writes at the (very liberal) St. Louis Post-Dispatch (h/t Gateway Pundit):

Well, Americans usually get the government they deserve, and I urge you all to get ready for this 21st century version of amateur hour. It’s going to be an embarrassing and dangerous time for America and American ideals. There won’t be much, I’m afraid, to be thankful for.

Bill Kristol, writing in The Weekly Standard, reminded me that every 16 years we get a Democrat president with no experience in national security or international affairs who’s elected after Republican presidents have made and kept America safe: After Eisenhower, we got Kennedy; after Nixon/Ford, we got Carter; after Reagan/Bush, we got Clinton. And after Bush II, we get Barack Obama.

Every strong Republican president who succeeded in protecting America has allowed Americans to become complacent about national security, thereby opening the door for weak Democrats who allowed enemies to threaten and attack America without penalty. Obama will be no different, and Americans will have to learn again that there can be no economic security without national security.

That’s not to say that Obama’s election doesn’t come with a couple of interesting side effects. For example, henceforth no black man in America may be called unqualified for any job that he might seek, no matter his prior education or experience level. Want to be a nuclear scientist but lack a Ph.D. in physics? If the applicant is a black man, it’s no problem. Just offer hope to the profession and promise change from all those stuffy theorems that have given the discipline its structure over the years, and you’re in.

That’s on a par with throwing out the fact that tax cuts lead to more investment, job creation and increasing government revenues, just because the black man, that transcendent agent of change, says it’s OK.

Another side effect has been white people contacting me to say that I should be proud to see a black man become president. Could there be a comment that is more condescending, more insulting, than that? If I believed that in America a black man could not be president, then I would be proud to see any black man elected president. But because I always have believed that nothing in America prevents a black man from becoming president or anything else he wants to be, I can be embarrassed, not proud, to see someone as unqualified and inexperienced as Obama become president.

Jackie Robinson, the first black man in modern-day major league baseball, illustrates my point. He was the right man with the right combination of talent, temperament and character at the right time to be successful for that important “first.” Obama? An empty suit who will fail.

Truly amazing. Buy that man an eggnog! Speaking of which, a hot toddy sounds really good right now…

At HotAir, Christmas comes early.

Saxby Wins!

After a fairly nasty campaign and every worse run-off, Saxby beats Jim Martin. The Democrats don’t get their super majority. Thank Heavens the election is now over in Georgia.
