Times A’Wastin’

No one took Hitler seriously back in the 30’s. Most governments passed him off as a swaggering buffoon, huffing and puffing about in the ruins of post WWI Germany. True, he was insane, but cunning and ruthless as well. By the time leaders and soldiers alike saw the truth, the face of the world was changed forever. Many, post-humously, labelled him the Anti-Christ. That may be true as well. But the Bible says there will be many.

Fast forward to 2006.

Another in a long line of swaggering buffoons has caught the fickle media’s eye. He, too, had humble beginnings and quietly rose to power. Has the world forgotten it’s History Lesson? The same situation presents itself, and like Neville Chamberlain, the world sits on its hands hoping for a “peaceful solution”. I hope and pray that behind the closed doors and stoic faces of the White House is a grand and wonderful plan to rid the world of the threat of radical Islam. For the sake of my children and my grandchildren to come, my hope endures.

Rather than a source of entertainment, I consider Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to be the most intelligent and dangerous foe the US faces. Not the Mullahs who currently hold power in Iran, and whose machinations put him in office. My reasons for concern about Ahmadinejad are based on the character and deportment of the man himself, his religious beliefs, and the “true” recipient of the letter ostensibly written to Bush. The common US media portrayal of Ahmadinejad as a grandiose bumpkin and the letter as mere rambling is a dangerous mistake. I would remind those making such assessments that Hitler appeared ridiculous for a long time, a skinny little man with a toothbrush moustache and a look of perpetual constipation. Idi Amin was also considered a buffoon, a late night comic’s easy joke. Ask the dead how funny these men are.

At All Things Beautiful, Geraghtyites vs. Tapscottians is an excellent round up of commentary and links on WHERE WE ARE NOW. She also quotes extensively Dean Barnett at dbsoxblog (emphasis mine)

The biggest issue of the day from history’s viewpoint will undoubtedly be civilization’s struggle with radical Islam. We are at war with Radical Islam. If you don’t believe that, let me offer a less controversial assertion – Radical Islam is at war with us.

How grave is the threat that the Jihadis pose? Existential. In other words, if Ahmadenijad has his way, America will cease to exist in any recognizable form. Of course, Ahmadenijad is just the most prominent dangerously deranged wacko of the week. Bin Laden remains deadly; so too do hundreds of thousands of Salafist Saudis. So does a fifth column already in America.

The goal of our foes is not to be a murderous nuisance. The goal is not to get Israel to fall back to pre-1967 borders. The goal is global conquest.

What I admire about this administration is it understands the threat, and it wants to fight it. If John Kerry were president, you just know he’d be looking for a way to jawbone the issue out to 2013 while applying global tests that would give him permission not to fight. If Al Gore were president, we’d still be looking for the root causes of 9/11 and consulting Bill Maher on where the “Why They Hate Us” pavilion should be located at Ground Zero. But here’s what I suspect about Bush, Rumsfeld and Cheney – the three of them are trying to figure out a way to strike Iran right now in a manner that will destroy the enemy and be tolerated by the American body politic. After all, we’re going to have to deal with this menace eventually. Better to do it now before the mullahs have nuclear weapons at their disposal. If I didn’t believe that Bush and company were willing and ready to fight, I would be indifferent to November’s results as well.

In some ways, I sympathize with Tapscott’s formulation. It would be tough to shed any tears if Lincoln Chafee were sent packing. Hell, I’ll go all in – it would be tough to weep if the Republican Party got as a reward for its incompetent twelve year stewardship of the House the demotion to minority party that it has so completely earned.

But unfortunately, we don’t have time for party purification at the moment. History’s moving too fast. We can’t take two years off for John Conyers to mount impeachment proceedings while the liberal blogosphere does multiple victory laps.

Just think of all the important committees Ted Kennedy would be chairman of. And consider two more terrifying words – Speaker Pelosi. Does that sound like a solid wartime government to you?

Our enemies will not be taking the next two years off – of that you can be sure. Friends, we live in consequential times. To paraphrase a great man, you go to war with the Party you have, not the Party you wish you had.

I couldn’t have said it better.

UPDATE: Another clue that History Is Repeating Itself, highlighted by Gates of Vienna. (by Dymphna)

The Wall Street Journal (must be a subscriber) is reporting the beginnings of what could be another sea change for Europe. Remember the 1930’s when so many of Europe’s intelligentsia came to America to escape Fascism? Albert Einstein was one; Karen Horney was another. Our intellectual ranks and our universities were enriched as Europe’s totalitarian rumblings caused the educated ranks to flee to safer shores. It seems to be happening again. In addition to Hirsi Ali’s imminent departure from the Netherlands, there is a growing feeling that Europe is not safe for those who dissent even a little from the received wisdom of the bureaucratic state, or dare to confront the Muslim taqiyya so prevalent there…

UPDATE II: Michelle Malkin reports a Canadian story that a newbadge Iranian law requiring Islamic garments and “special insignia” for non-Muslims. Can I scream this any LOUDER?!?!?!?!? Ten minutes later, she adds a link that it may not be true. This is as maddening as a Cold War Mis-Information Campaign.

StopTheACLU has this to say:

Isn’t it ironic that a nation that denies the holocaust ever happened has so much in common with the very intolerance and ideals that created the holocaust in the first place? Quite scary, but not suprising.

UPDATE III: Welcome All Things Beautiful readers! I rant about alot of different things, mostly from a Southern point of view.

UPDATE IV: The Baron at Gates of Vienna muses as to which of the coming days will be our Dunkirk.

Our catastrophe isn’t here yet — we have yet to experience our Dunkirk — but we are coming up on 1940 awfully quickly.

[…] A couple of days ago, a wrote a little about my concern over current events in Iran paralleling events in pre-WWII Germany. Since I’m a little blog and mostly write for myself, family and a few friends, imagine my surprise to be linked back to aleftie-in-denial blog declaring me, along with a host of other conservative blogs, an “Amateur Propogandist“. And decrying the fact that I hadn’t posted later that the “news” wasn’t true. Well, there’s a reason why. I believe it’s true. I believe that we are watching history refold itself around another sinister demagogue who wants to conquer the world and will stop at NOTHING until he fulfills his self-proclaimed prophecy. Last time, no one listened until it was too late. […]

[…] The more I learn, the madder I get. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; the world seems to have slipped back into a late 1930’s state of mind. Listen to the platitudes – “Can’t we all get along?” “He’s not a terrorist; he’s just a troubled young man.” Yadda Yadda Yadda. But there is a real and insipid evil, far beyond that Balrog in your closet, waiting to destroy us. WANTING to destroy us. Just like before. […]

[…] Separate, but equal. Riiiiight. I remember how that was. Mark Steyn looks so young in his pictures. He’s not old, like me. Did he ever see the separate entrances, the separate fountains, the separate everything – in realtime? Through the eyes of a child, who saw that “Red and yellow, black and white, they are precious in His sight” only applied on Sundays or to missionaries in far-away places? The multicultural mush-mouths have emasculated the West. What happened to the strong men, with steely resolve, who were not afraid to stand up for what they believe in? To protect their families? Their country? The threat now is not from some rising mustache halfway across the world – the threat is here. Now. Down the street. In the schools. In the workplace. At the ballfields. America is being threatened from within. That voice from the great northern wilderness, Mark Steyn, needs a bank of loudspeakers pointed toward America. His travails in Canada will be ours as well, soon enough. […]
