Tag! I’ve been Meme’d….

The Anchoress pinged me with this thing, but in the interest of peace and good will among bloggers, I’ll play 🙂 . And besides, it’s about Christmas and I was planning on writing a few posts on Christmas memories.

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate? Egg Nog with my buddy Jack.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree? Santa leaves a few things unwrapped just for the surprise factor, but mostly everything gets wrapped. Even though my kids are high school/college age, they still love the idea of Santa.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? Yes. Right in the foyer, so unsuspecting visitors are subject to sneak attack.

5. When do you put your decorations up? We shoot for Thanksgiving weekend, but usually it ends up being the first week of December. This year we down-sized some by buying a 7.5′ prelit and our tree decorating time has been an astonishing 25% of what it was previously. And less yelling.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Dressing with gravy. Sweet & spicy roasted pecans.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child: Going to see Santa at Rich’s and riding the Pink Pig (it’s an Atlanta thing). While you waited in line for Santa, you got to look into the stalls of the real, LIVE reindeer. One time one of them pooped.

My best grownup memory is the last year we lived in the old house. My oldest had gotten one of those big PlaySkool dollhouses. My little one would crawl through the front door of the playhouse – he almost fit through except for his diaper. He’d wiggle and tug and go right around and do it again. And again. And again.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? Finding stuff in my grandma’s closet, then the same stuff showing up under our tree. Then I made the connection.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yep…just one.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? Lights and ornaments, ribbons, those twirly glittered stick things, Santas, beaded fruit. Mostly gold/silver/burgundy/pink/crystal. Lots of angels, musical instruments, hearts. We also have a massive Santa collection that sits on the mantle beside the tree, and now spills over onto the hearth, and any other available table space. We even put one on the clock. The biggest Santa is about 3 feet tall and the smallest is about a half inch.

11. Snow! Love it or dread it? Love to watch it fall, love to know it’s on the ground. Hate to drive in it.

12. Can you ice skate? Ha! No.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Received or given? My favorite gift was given and was last Christmas when we had poor-mouthed the whole season….don’t expect alot, times are tough, be grateful for what you get…. Then the last present my kids opened was 4 tickets to see Wicked The Musical wrapped up in a shirt box. They jumped up and down like monkeys. Ahhh…..it was great.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you? Jesus’ Birth, family and reconnecting with friends. I miss my daughter soooo much who is away at college. She doesn’t make it home nearly enough and during Christmas she’s home almost 3 weeks!

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Cookies. Big, bumpy, nutty, and lots of chocolate chips! And Chocolate cheesecake. I am faint with anticipation.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Every Christmas Eve, we read aloud Luke 2 & the Night Before Christmas. We used to go see Santa every year, but now, well the kids are just too big. I’m planning a post about our favorite Santa ever….

17. What tops your tree? An Angel we bought the first year we were married.

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving.

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? The Shepherd’s Farewell to the Holy Family by Berlioz. Sang it once with Robert Shaw. Absolutely beautiful….

20. Candy canes: Yuck! Sticky! Ant attractors!

21. Favorite Christmas movie? The Christmas Story…the one with Ralphie. “You’ll put your eye out”

22. What do you leave for Santa? Old fashioned Southern Tea Cakes and Milk and carrots for the reindeer.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! Now I’m going to pass the Santa hat to A Wing and A Prayer, Holy Fool and Maxed Out Mama .
