Spring has Arrived

How do I know? Because the age-old argument of “Where do you find the best Fried Green Tomatoes?” has begun. In earnest.

Of the places listed in the link, I can personally attest to having FINE FGT’s:
The Blue Willow, Social Circle
The Bulloch House, Warm Springs
Whistle Stop Cafe, Juliette (*there’s a good story on this one)
Bay Breeze, Mableton

So-so FGT’s:
Mary Mac’s, Atlanta (a fine Atlanta dining spot for years, but after a buyout, the quality declined. But I hear they are getting better, again)

Not on their list, but mine:
The Flying Biscuit, Atlanta (get’em quick – they’ve been bought out by the parent company of Moe’s, so expect mass-produced foolery any day now)
Gumbeaux’s, Douglasville
The Green Manor, Union City
The Lady & Sons, Savannah

Fried Green Tomatoes
3 or 4 large firm green tomatoes
Salt
2 cups vegetable or peanut oil, for deep-frying
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups self-rising flour
6 slices bacon, cut in 1/2 and cooked until crisp
6 eggs, poached
Hollandaise sauce, recipe follows

Slice the tomatoes 1/4-inch thick. Lay them out in a shallow baking pan and sprinkle with salt. Place the tomato slices in a colander and allow time for the salt to pull the water out of the tomatoes, approximately 30 minutes. In a skillet, heat the oil for deep-frying over medium-high heat. Dip the tomatoes into buttermilk, then dredge them in flour. Deep-fry until golden brown. Keep warm.

Or in my case, eat right away!
