Claude Michael Gann – 2996 Tribute

mike gann

Mike Gann was 41 and recently happily remarried when he went to the Risk Waters conference at Windows on the World. He and his wife, Robin, had taken an “elopement” with their kids to the beach and then DisneyWorld just a few months before, but were still waiting to take their real honeymoon.

C. Michael Gann, IM 85, of Roswell, was Atlanta’s first reported casualty. He was at a conference on the 106th floor of the first tower struck. He called his wife, Robin, twice — to tell her what had happened and then to say goodbye; smoke was everywhere and he didn’t think he would make it.

He volunteered to attend the conference, because other Algorithmics employees could not attend. The conference was scheduled to end that day and Mike would have headed home.

Mike grew up in Smyrna, Georgia and attended Wills High School. After graduating from Georgia Tech, IM ’85, he pursued a master’s degree in finance and marketing from Mercer University. He loved his family, his church and his Lord.

Ed Bolduc, director of music ministry for St. Ann’s Life Teen program:

“He was one of the most humble and sincere guys I have ever met in my life,” he said. “As a music minister I truly believe that you don’t just play music, but you pray music. He was a shining example of that. It was really inspiring.”

A former worship leader himself, Mike loved to share his gift:

In the 80s at Atlanta Vineyard I was spoiled to feeling this almost every Sunday when the late Mike Gann led us in worshiping the Lord. He was definitely someone cut in David’s mold. But since that time I’ve found it very rare to be in the presence of a worship leader who knows how to lead people into the “presence of God.”

The city of Roswell has dedicated a plaque in memory of Mike and the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

I’m emotionally exhausted from all the pain of this. I can only imagine the grief of the families involved.

Mike and I knew each other from GT. He and I had similar visions when I started the Entrepreneur’s Club. I saw him again on planes to NY where we both had business. I wish I had gotten to know him better. I grieve with his family and friends on this tenth anniversary of his passing. God bless the memory of Claude Michael Gann and God Bless America!

I barely knew Mike Gann. And I only really knew who he was, because when I first set foot as a student on the campus of Georgia Tech, I stopped by the Baptist Student Union and a very attractive girl there exclaimed “You look like Mike Gann!” . Later, I barely got to know Mike – just enough to say hello as we ran into each other on the Ga. Tech campus and the BSU. What I will always remember, is that a few people became a part of my life simply because I resembled someone that obviously impacted their own lives in a positive way. Every once in a while someone on campus would wave and smile & sometimes speak & say “Oh I’m sorry, I thought you were …” and I would finish with “Mike Gann?” .

The point I guess I’m trying to make is that even thought I barely knew Mike Gann – he still had a positive influence on my life that has stretched across the years. It was long after 9/11 that I discovered he actually lost his life in that tragic event.

That horror of September 11, 2001 was forced upon us. I honestly do not know why this has affected me on this day in 2019 the way it has. But I can sincerely say because of it, there is now a “hard-coded marker” burned into my psyche, that has led me on a round-about journey of noticing the name of “Mike Gann” on social media. Which led me to recall those fleeting events from my past, and to discover more about the man which I only briefly knew back in college. The descriptions from his friends & the telling of anecdotes of his life leads me to this message:

Look at how Mike Gann has influenced others & made the world a better place – even years after his own life was cut so short. I feel obligated – and thankful for the reminder – to live the rest of my life in the pursuit of finding happiness, making this world a better place. And to strive to recognize the guidance to do so from the most unexpected of places and the most unexpected of times.
